Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay learned that art is a great instrument for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. While DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma inspire her later to make the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received degrees in English and African American Studies. As a student DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she shifted to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. From this position she started her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
